James Heller re-visits the city, when his home, following his excusal from a battle in the Middle East. He finds that his significant other and little girl have been murdered, sending him into a descending winding of misery and fury. He takes off on a suicidal mission into the core of the Red Zone with the goal of dying and taking the same number of horrifying presences as he can with him. A battle follows between the two, driving Heller assaulting Mercer on numerous occasions just to be tossed back. Intrigued by his activities, Mercer contaminates Heller with his own strain of the Blacklight infection as he trusted him to be the ideal lieutenant in spreading the infection past Manhattan. Heller stirs in one of Gentek’s exploration offices and figures out how to get away.
